Veteran-Owned Business Takes Lead on Local EV Charging Stations

Renua Energy is a clean energy-focused SDVOSB based in Glens Falls, NY

(GLENS FALLS, NY) If you've powered up an electric vehicle recently in the Capital Region, the charging station you used may have been installed by a local company called Renua Energy.

President David Byrne, a U.S Army veteran, founded the company in 2013. He says 4 years ago he realized that EV's were the wave of the future and people needed places to charge them - whether at their house or commercial businesses. He chose to then focus a large part of his company towards installing those chargers.

"Our mission is to be the very best in EV charging station installation in New York and then move out to surrounding states and build on that success." He says.

Renua Energy has installed charging stations at many places in the Capital Region stretching from Lake George to Chatham. But EV's only make up a part of what Byrne's business does. It's also behind dozens of community solar construction projects throughout the entire Northeast.

Based in Glens Falls, Renua Energy is a NYS certified Service-Disable Veteran-Owned Small Business. Bryne served overseas in the Iraq War and says his interest in solar energy began while spending time in Kuwait.

"Based on those experiences, I realized I wanted to promote energy independence because I also believe that increases national security." He says. "I wanted to be part of the clean energy movement in terms of energy independence."

According to Renua's website, when it comes to EV chargers, there are 3 levels ranked on price and speed of the charge. For example, a level 1 charger can be plugged into a 120V outlet and can charge an EV from 0% to 80% in about 48 hours. A level 3 charger, or DC Fast Charger, are usually installed at commercial or municipal locations that get lots of traffic. A typical EV can charge from 0% to 80% in about 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the power ratings. Byrne says in the past 2.5 years, there have been increased requests for high-power charging solutions, like the DC Fast Charger.

"The demand has grown but also the size and the scale of the projects that we're working on has grown." He says.

A trend sure to continue in an industry growing at a fast pace and New York State's plans for all new passenger vehicles to be zero emission by the year 2035.
