What Was Once a Roadside Rescue Is Now Renua’s Newest Team Member
Written By: Dave Byrne, Renua Founder & President
Meet Moses, my hero from yesterday.
Miracles, synchronicity, and serendipity happen on a daily basis, but sometimes they show up on the side of the road in 95-degree heat. No kidding — there I was driving to a site visit at an Amazon facility in Central NY in preparation for a bid submission when my 255k+ mile wheels sprung a coolant leak and started overheating in the sweltering weather. I pulled over and called to notify my team members, who were driving to the same site visit from different locations, that I might not make it.
Within five minutes, a truck pulled over and out stepped Moses — a big man with a huge heart. He offered to help repair my car, but quickly realized it was beyond his abilities. Without hesitation, he offered to drive me to a local towing company so I could make arrangements. He was in visible pain and eventually told me he had pulled his back earlier in the day and was suffering from muscle spasms. He had just come from helping someone else in need, which hadn’t helped the situation. Still, he insisted on making sure I was taken care of.
Moses is a humble man driving a run-down truck without air conditioning. In fact, it seemed like his truck might break down on the way to the garage. The passenger-side window didn’t roll down, but he kept turning his makeshift fan toward me to make sure I wasn’t roasting alive. The first two towing companies couldn’t help, but Moses kept driving me around Amsterdam until he knew I was squared away.
During the drive, he shared parts of his life with me — and it is full of miracles. His family moved from the Dominican Republic shortly after he was born. When he was 18 months old, his mother threw him out of a five-story window in Manhattan. He later spent 24 years in prison, beginning at age 16. While incarcerated, he had powerful encounters with God. He forgave his mother and found healing through his personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the power of forgiveness. Now he tries to spread God’s love wherever he goes.
It turns out Moses is a contractor and has done quite a bit of electrical work, including some solar projects — very interesting to me, as we’re always looking for good help. I didn’t make it to the Amazon facility site visit, but once I squared away the towing arrangements, I called my foreman. As it happened, he was returning from a job site and driving through Amsterdam at the time. I was directly on his route, and he picked me up one minute after I called him.
I’m always amazed by the generosity of folks who stop to help others on the side of the road. Most of us assume the driver has already called their insurance company and all is well. We justify not stopping because we’re busy, but it often comes down to self-absorption and self-importance. This is not the first time that a hero like Moses has stopped to offer help when I was stranded with my car. I want to be more like Moses — a humble man with a huge heart. I’m grateful for life’s simple miracles and synchronicity.
Moses Joins The Renua Family
What makes this story even more meaningful is what happened next. What was our president’s savior back in June turned into Renua’s newest employee. After staying in touch and getting to know more about his experience in electrical work and solar, Moses joined our team. Today, he works on our solar install crew and supports inventory management. His story is such a heartfelt one that we couldn’t help but share it here — and we’re glad to have him on the team.
