Meet Moses, my hero from yesterday.
No kidding, there I was...driving to a site visit at an Amazon facility in Central NY, in preparation for a bid submission.
My 255k+ mile wheels sprung a coolant leak and started overheating in the sweltering 95 degree weather.
I pull over, and call to notify my team members, driving to the same site visit from different locations, that I might not make it.
Within 5 minutes, a truck pulls over and out steps Moses: a big man with a huge heart. He offers to help repair my car, but quickly realizes that it is beyond his abilities. He then offers to drive me to a local towing company, so that I can make arrangements.
He is in visible pain, and eventually tells me that he pulled his back earlier in the day, and is suffering from muscle spasms. Also, he just came from helping someone else in need, and that didn't help the back situation.
Moses is a humble man, driving a run-down truck, without any air conditioning. In fact, it seems like his truck might break down on the way to the garage! The passenger-side window doesn't roll down, but he keeps turning his makeshift fan towards me, to ensure that I'm not roasting alive.
The first two towing companies can't help, but Moses keeps driving me around Amsterdam until he knows I'm squared away.
He shares a bit of his life with me, and it is full of miracles. His family moved from Dominican Republic shortly after he was born.
His mother threw him out of a five story window in Manhattan when he was 18 months old.
He went to prison for 24 years, starting when he was 16 years old.
He had powerful encounters with God while he was incarcerated.
He forgave his mother, and found healing through his personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the power of forgiveness. Now he tries to spread God's love wherever he goes.
It turns out that he's a contractor now, and has done quite a bit of electrical work, including some solar projects--very interesting to me, as we're always looking for good help.
I didn't make it to the Amazon facility site visit, but as soon as I squared away the towing arrangements, I called my foreman, who, it turns out, was returning from a job site, and driving through Amsterdam at the time. I was directly on his route and he picked me up one minute after I called him.
I'm always amazed by the sheer generosity of folks who stop to help others on the side of the road. Most of us assume that the driver has already called their insurance company and all is well. We also justify our failure to lend a helping hand due to our busy schedules, but it really comes down to self-absorption and self-importance. This is not the first time though, that a hero like Moses has stopped to offer help when I was stranded with my car.
I want to be more like Moses, a humble man with a huge heart.
I'm grateful for life's simple miracles and synchronicity.
